THIRD TRI CONTINENTAL FILM FESTIVAL – INDIA 2007

We are happy to invite you to the third Tricontinental film festival Human Rights in Frames Feb.9 to 11th 2007.

Time: Friday, 9th Feb.2007: 2 pm to 8 pm, Saturday 10th Feb: 11 am to 8 pm,

Sunday,11th Feb. 11 am, to 8pm

The TRI Continental Film Festival was conceived in 2002 by a group of Latin American filmmakers, the Movimiento de Documentalistas, as an arts and cultural initiative that seeks to use the medium of film to explore linkages between social struggles and respect for human rights norms and practices. With the aim to showcase human rights cinema from the three continents that form part of the global South, the festival has become an annual event in Latin America, Africa, where it is hosted by Uhuru Productions, and Asia. Breakthrough, with its emphasis on popular culture and media as tools for transformation and mainstreaming human rights concerns, has been hosting and organizing the TRI Continental Film Festival’s Asian leg in India every year since 2004, to wide critical and popular acclaim.

The 2007 festival has received over 100 entries, and of these 24 films will be screened. 2007 will also see newer themes explored in the festival such as the alienation faced by call centre workers, the politics of toilets, the war on terror, children in conflict situations, gay and transgender people gazing and being gazed at through the lens, the lives of revolutionary women, the plight of undocumented immigrants and the rights of indigenous communities. Most of the films screened will be either Asia or India premieres, thus bringing an otherwise inaccessible brand of cinema to this part of the world.

While the cultures of militarism and greed seek to dominate our politico-economic landscape, the TRI Continental Film Festival challenges filmmakers of the global South and those committed to telling stories from embattled communities in the Americas, Africa and Asia to present us with alternative windows to a different kind of world. It is committed to promoting a human rights culture in India that respects the equal rights of all regardless of religion, gender, class, caste, sexual orientation, age and disability.
