Nani Cinematheque in collaboration with Bangalore Film Society, Collective Chaos and Films for Freedom is proud to present all the answers and more over a weekend of Kundan Shah culminating with the master himself, LIVE IN PERSON and the Bangalore premiere of his latest film, THE THREE SISTERS.

Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa (1993)
Shah’s criminally under-appreciated 93’ blockbuster was a unique take on the quintessential Bollywood love triangle- Lovable Loser dealing with his fear of losing the love of his life to the son of a Crorepati. A classic romantic comedy replete with good performances, lilting melodies, warm memorable scenes… KHKN is as fun and cozy as it gets in the movies. And with that, Eye for India screens its first Shah Rukh Khan.

Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983)
So ahead of it’s time was Shah’s breakthrough debut, shot on a shoe string budget of Rs. 15 lakh, went almost unnoticed at the time of its release. Over time, it steadily acquired a cult following on VHS and Television until it spun itself into a bonafide legend. A absurd, outrageously comical tale of two down-on-their-luck photographers who get embroiled with mercenary builders, corrupt cops, an apathetic municipality and the sell-out press, JBDY ever after over two decades since it’s release still rings potent, true and very very very very very funny.

There are many tragic news stories of multiple suicides of three/four sisters in India due to dowry. This film makes three such sisters as its protagonists. The film opens with them about to commit the act when they’re interrupted and are forced to postpone their deaths by six hours. What happens in this gratuitous period of six hours is the subject matter of the film. Without any flashbacks, the film brings out the essence of their lives which has led them to this decision. It explores all their joys and sorrows, and mainly, their zest for life even when the death is virtually knocking at their door. They shouldn’t have died. None of these girls should have ever died. How these tragedies can be avoided is the hope and vision of this film.
